SG1: AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT IN CLASSROOM. "Authentic Learning is not discovered in a textbook, but rather at the crossroads of contemporary societal issues and student passion." -Aaron Duff.
An authentic assessment is very important because it helps to improve the teaching and learning process. Through an authentic assessment, teachers can challenge their students to perform tasks that have real-life relevance. With this, students are given the opportunity to show what they know and what they can do. Students will also be able to develop and acquire lifelong learning competencies that would be beneficial for them as they took their steps towards the real world where the life is more challenging than inside a classroom. An authentic assessment is truly an effective tool to ensure students success in their professional and personal life.
SG2: PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT. Learning should not only focus on what students know or on what they can do. Assessment should focus both on the process on how they do a certain task and the finish product. Performance-based assessment is divided into two types which is the process-based assessment and product-based assessment. So as future educators, it is important for us to understand the difference between these two types of assessment for us to design appropriate classroom activities to attain our intended learning outcomes. Let us engage our students into different tasks that applies process-based assessment and product-based assessment. And in terms of evaluating our students, we can make use of scoring rubrics. Scoring rubric is an effective tool to assess our students work easily and fairly.
SG3: AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT OF THE AFFECTIVE DOMAIN. Affective domain plays a vital role in education. it utilizes behaviors of awareness, interest, attention and responsibility of our students. But nowadays, when we think of educational assessment, we often think of the cognitive aspect and unfortunately, the practice of routinely assessing the learner’s affective aspect is often left behind. The focus of assessment is given most of the time to the learner’s cognitive aspect and little or no time is spent in the development of the affective domain. However, let’s not forget that affective domain is as much as important as the other domains. Truthfully affective domain is far more difficult to assess compared to the other domains but proper assessment methods must be utilized in order to improve the teaching-learning process and the academic achievement and experiences of our students.
SG4: COMMUNICATING AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT RESULTS. It is a bit challenging for us teachers to communicate assessment results. But there are various medias that we can make use of and one of this is the portfolio. We can communicate assessment results effectively if we make use of portfolio because it contains all of the students works that exhibits their efforts, progress and achievements at a certain subject area. By just showing the portfolio, students will see their level of performance as well as their parents. Parents will be aware and be able to understand their child’s growth. With this we will enhance the support needed for our students to improve their learning. Open communication is very important to maintain the good relationship between students, parents, teachers and other stakeholders.
SG5:ASSESSMENT OF ONE'S TEACHING PRACTICE. Teachers evaluate their students to determine what they have learned. But evaluation is not only for students, it is also applicable for teachers. Evaluation among teachers is concerned to assess the effectiveness of their teaching, their strategies, methods and techniques. Teacher evaluations and peer evaluations are great help to cultivate their professional development. It is a way to identify one's teaching practice. Through this, teachers will know what are their strengths as well as their weaknesses that may need to improve which will be beneficial for them and for their students. Professional development matter as it empowers teachers to perform better and improve the quality of education.
